When Should I Buy a Maternity or Breastfeeding Bra?

When Should I Buy a Maternity or Breastfeeding Bra?

When Is the Best Time to Buy a Maternity or Breastfeeding Bra?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "When should I buy a maternity bra?" The answer isn't the same for everyone, but there are a few key milestones that can help you decide.

During Pregnancy

Many women notice their breasts begin changing from the very first trimester. They may become larger, heavier, or more sensitive, making your usual bras feel uncomfortable.

If your current bras are starting to feel tight or restrictive, it's a good time to switch to a maternity bra. Maternity bras are designed with soft, stretchy fabrics that move with your changing body and provide gentle support without uncomfortable wires digging in.

For many mums-to-be, this happens somewhere between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, but there's no "right" time. If you're uncomfortable, it's time.

Before Baby Arrives

Even if your current bras are still fitting reasonably well, we recommend having at least two or three breastfeeding bras ready before your baby is born.

Once your milk comes in, your breasts can change size quite quickly, and you'll appreciate having comfortable, easy-to-use nursing bras already on hand rather than rushing out shopping with a newborn.

While Breastfeeding

Your body continues to change throughout your breastfeeding journey. Many mums find they need to adjust their bra size as their milk supply regulates or as feeding patterns change.

It's completely normal to replace or add bras during this time. Having a few comfortable options means you'll always have one to wear while the others are in the wash—something every breastfeeding mum will appreciate!

Signs It's Time for a New Bra

You may be ready for a new maternity or breastfeeding bra if:

  • Your current bra feels tight or leaves marks on your skin.
  • Your cups are overflowing or gaping.
  • The band rides up your back.
  • Your breasts feel unsupported.
  • You're struggling to unclip your nursing bra with one hand.

Comfort matters, especially when you're feeding around the clock.

Our Tip

Rather than waiting until your old bras become unbearable, switch as soon as they stop fitting comfortably. A well-fitting maternity or breastfeeding bra can make a big difference to your comfort throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
